My foray into increased wellness

Posted in Fitness, Food, Healing at 11:26 PM by moxiemuse

Monday, June 20th, Jason and I are embarking on a new wellness program called The Metabolic Effect. I’m going to use this platform to blog about our progress. Gasp! I’ve gone public and there’s no turning back. Just as well that we have all of our friends and family keeping us accountable.

So why now and why this?

Well, because it is time we move the dial on our fitness/weight loss goals. As for why this program, our trainer, Jill Crippen, had good personal and client success by following this program. In her infinite wisdom and sincere desire to see us succeed with our goals, Jill suggested we try it to crank our wellness up a notch 😉

In late March, I thought I’d ease into it by first reading the book, The New ME Diet: Eat More, Workout Less, and Actually Lose Weight While You Rest. I liked what I read and knew that it was something I wanted to try in a few months when my life settled down a bit.

The program seemed doable and I like doable 🙂 The authors (and brothers) Jade and Keoni Teta offer a practical approach to unlocking fat-burning hormones and revving up my metabolism. What’s not to like about that?!

When Jill told us about a Groupon.com deal for $39 for the 10 week online program, we jumped at the chance and bought two packages just in the nick of time before the offer expired. Phew!

Here’s the scoop:

In addition to an in-person, in-studio program in North Carolina, the company offers an online self-paced, and email based body change and coaching program. It is designed to determine the key areas of our metabolism that must be supported to burn fat more efficiently. Also, it screens brain chemistry with in-depth questionnaires to pinpoint our imbalances and eliminate some of the traditional challenges with willpower that we might encounter during a lifestyle change.

We’ll also be given instructions on the exercise protocols required to accelerate fat burning and improve muscle tone and body shape. These workouts are supplied via an Internet portal where we can see the workouts and then do them at home or have Jill help us incorporate them into our workouts with her twice a week.

The strength of the program lies in the coaching component. We’ll interact continuously with the Metabolic Effect staff throughout the process. We’ll receive daily emails and weekly audio lectures that cover everything we could ever hope to know about fat loss and the new fat loss lifestyle we’ve signed up for this summer. These lectures focus on diet and exercise, but also cover lifestyle and belief.

As an added benefit, we’ll be able to interact with other participants on a forum where we can ask questions of the ME staff and each other to help us learn through shared experiences.

Finally, this program is meant to deliver results, and is not a quick fix or crash diet. Instead, the program will teach us the new science of fat loss and helps us learn, practice, and master sustainable habits to last long after the 10 weeks are over.

We’re excited about embarking on this adventure together. Follow along, track our progress, send us encouragement, and help us meet our new wellness goals! Stay tuned for updates weekly as we learn and grow (smaller).

Old Essene Exercise of Purification and Health

Posted in Celebrations, Healing, Health, Spirit tagged , , , , at 1:48 PM by moxiemuse

Stand in living nature, between the earth and the sky. Feel the earth under your feet; feel how the earth carries you and holds you up. Feel the infinite sky above you; it inspires, straightens, and elevates you. In the sky, think of the origin of your spirit and of your intelligence. In the sky, think of the origin of your eternal soul, of the higher universal consciousness. In the earth, think of the origin of your terrestrial soul, of your individual consciousness. Feel yourself as a living union of the forces of the sky and the earth, of the infinite and the development.

Kneel on the ground, and with your right hand, dig a little hole in the earth. Put your hands together in front of the center of your chest (mystical heart), in the sign of prayer and inner union with heaven and earth within you. In this sacred posture, let a beautiful light, a force, a presence of the heaven flow through you: the omnipresence of the Father of all living beings. You can imagine a diamond light, transparent like pure water. Bend down with love before Mother Earth, and place your hands around the little hole. Bend down completely so that your mouth is laid on your hands. Offer then by your word the “thank you” of heaven to Mother Earth; offer also the “thank you” of your heart, and, through it, the “thank you” of the heart of humanity. Pronounce the words:”Mother Earth, I offer you the “thank you” of my heart and, through it, the “thank you” of the heart of all men and women. May all beings that you carry within your bosom, nurture, protect, and let grow be blessed.”

Stretch yourself out on the ground and abandon yourself totally to the earth. That your body and your soul born from it be one with the Mother-Earth and her hidden splendor. Think and say:”Mother Earth, take all of my illnesses and my faults according your will, so that I may receive the blessing of the heavenly Spirit to transmit it to all living beings according his will.”Remain in silent communion while letting the earth purify you completely.

Rise to your knees again, and put your hands together in front of the rose of the sun of the heart. Think in your spirit, feel in your soul, and say with your force of life:”With love and gratitude, I offer my loving “thank you” filled with light. To the Mother Earth, thank you; To the water of life, thank you; To the precious air, thank you; To the sacred fire, thank you; To the stable minerals, thank you; To the plants, thank you; To the animals, thank you; To humanity walking on the path of evolution, thank you; To all of the angels, thank you; To the cosmic intelligence which created my thought, thank you; To the ocean of love which created my sensibility, thank you; To the universal life which impregnated my future with the seed of individuality, thank you; To all of the beings of the world, I give my “thank you” within Him, the unique Source who unites all beings within the origin and the goal.”Fold your arms on your chest, bow slightly your head, and pronounce the word of conclusion: “Amen”.

Then, refill the hole that you had dug to speak to the Mother of the world. By practicing such exercises, which are totally suitable for our contemporary life, you will notice that you receive a force of balance and harmony which lets you remain more centered and be more yourself in life.

A day of spas

Posted in Books, Healing, Spirit tagged , , , , , , at 7:55 PM by moxiemuse

All day yesterday, I kept hearing the phrase, like a series of spas…, and felt compelled to share my resort-like happenings:

Yoga spa: The day started with 2 hours of Isha Yoga. The postures, breathwork, and meditation set up calming energies for the day. I’ve maintained this yoga practice since April when I completed a 7-day Inner Engineering intensive; the results of which are so life-altering, that since then, I strive to keep it as a twice-daily routine so as to enjoy its benefits long term.

Nature spa: I ate a delicious lunch on a  maple-shaded bench in Bellevue’s downtown park overlooking the waterfall. I sat for hours listening to birds chirp, dogs bark, and children at play. The sounds of animal and human nature comingling. Sitting still and not feeling rushed is always a treat unto itself so being able to do it amidst nature was a gift I must give myself more often.

Word spa: After lunch, as the wind whistled a bit too mightily through the thin pages, I hungrily read Salman Rushdie’s engaging book, The Enchantress of Florence. Only half-way through, I’ve already marked some memorable passages, such as: “About the dignity of the lost, about losing, and how it cleansed the soul to accept defeat, and about letting go, avoiding the trap of holding on too tightly to what you wanted, and about abandonment in general, and in particular fatherlessless, the lessness of fathers, the lessness of the fatherless, and the best defenses of those who are less against those who are more: invwardness, forethought, cunning, humility, and good peripheral vision. The many lessons of lessness. The lessening from which growing could begin.”

Body spa: Later, I headed over to Ummelina International Spa, where I relaxed into Restoration, a healing body ritual full of aromatic and lymphatic treatments to detox and revive the body. The gift of this treatment came from Nina herself (the owner) and I am oh-so-very-grateful. The 3-hour treatment was just what I needed. I could actually feel my body reacting in appreciation. For the first time. Ever. Over the last two decades, I’ve had many spa treatments and always thoroughly enjoyed them. This time, I could literally feel my body reacting and I ‘heard’ it say: this is good, this is what I really need, thank you. To have my body respond so clearly was a very good sign.

SoundSpa: My friend and sound healer, Gila Cadry, hosts monthly SoundSpas in her Mercer Island home and last night’s evensong was a wonderful exploration of mantras from many global traditions–Hebrew, ancient Egyptian, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Christian. To me, it felt like her chants were intimate conversations she was having with beings from those traditions. I mentioned this to her afterward and she agreed.

For those that don’t know, for many years now, Gila has been singing, chanting, and meditating as a modality for healing, first to help herself feel better and then to help others. A decade ago, she was quite ill with a blood disorder and turned to music for comfort. This evolved from private to public using crystal bowls and her own voice. The next thing she knew, she was making CDs and meeting clients. Six years later, her blood work was normal. Her doctor told her that whatever she’s doing, keep doing it. I’m so glad she does.

Here’s to all the spas in your life! I look forward to having more of them in mine.

Tulsi, the Taj Mahal, and the Medicine Buddha

Posted in Healing, Health, Oils, Spirit, Travel tagged at 9:00 PM by moxiemuse

David Crow of Floracopeia, one of the essential oil suppliers I work with, was in southern India (Kanyakumari, to be precise) for a month leading an Ayurvedic Aromtherapy retreat. While there, he received a fascinating newspaper article in his hotel room. The newspaper, Press Trust of Inida, reported on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009, that the wonder herb (one of my favorites), ‘Tulsi’, which is known for its medicinal qualities, will now help protect the Taj Mahal against the ill effects of environmental pollution. Over one million saplings will be planted in the vicinity of the Monument of Love.

On being asked why Tulsi was chosen, one of the CEOs involved in the project, Krishan Gupta said, “It is one of the best plants which purifies the environment. Its cleansing action is due to its property to release high amounts of oxygen, which minimizes the adverse impact of industrial and refinery emissions. Tulsi will help reduce the air pollution at the periphery of the monument.”

The area where David taught, Kanyakumari, is named after the youthful form of the primeval energy Shakti (Mother Goddess). It is the only place in the whole world where one can witness the ‘confluence’ of three great seas: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. Kanyakumari is one of the few places in the world where one can witness both the sunset and sunrise at the same beach due to the geography. No wonder this little gem attracted Mahatma Gandhi.

David Crow is a leader in the growing aromatherapy movement in the United States. His best-selling book, In Search of the Medicine Buddha, tells the tale of how David, an acupuncturist and herbalist, journeyed to Nepal in search of medical teachings from Tibetan and Ayurvedic doctors. Over the next ten years, he studied the art and science of traditional Asian medicine. His book is a colorful and captivating story of adventure, exploration, and self-discovery into the wonders of Himalyan herbology and spirituality.

In September, I will be attending In The Garden of the Medicine Buddha: An Immersion Retreat, with David in California.

SyncTxt customized synchronistic text messages

Posted in Healing, Spirit, Technology tagged , , at 4:54 PM by moxiemuse

Are meaningful coincidences entirely random? Or do they suggest that the mind has a subtle capacity to influence physical events? SyncTXT lets you explore this question for yourself.

SyncTXT sends customized text message alerts to your mobile phone, selected and timed using Psyleron REG-1 technology. Research suggests that the messages you receive, and the times you receive them, are subject to the influence of your consciousness.

I think this is COOL. I just started using this service and will update this blog with stories of how it is working for me.

Crystal skulls and crystal heads abound in my head today

MAX the Crystal Skull from Houston, Texas

MAX the Crystal Skull from Houston, Texas

My friend, JoAnn Parks of Houston, TX, is the caretaker of MAX the Crystal Skull. She’s visited my home with MAX and we’ve had many people come and sit with MAX and his energies. MAX is a true wonder of the world when it comes to ancient, dare I say even, off-world artifacts. MAX has been featured in a number of TV documentaries and in radio programs.

MAX came into the life of JoAnn and Carl Parks over 20 years ago when JoAnn, desperate to prolong the life of her dying daughter, was introduced to Norbu Chen, a Tibetan red-hat lama, who used MAX the Crystal Skull to heal her daughter. JoAnn’s daughter lived another 3 years as a result of Norbu’s work with MAX. Norbu gave MAX to JoAnn and told her that one day, she would know what to do with it. It sat in her closet for 7 years until through the result of a chance TV program, she connected with Nick Nocerino, the owner of another ancient crystal skull, Sha Na Ra.

Both MAX and Sha Na Ra are considered to be part of the legend-story of 13 crystal skulls, who were once together on earth acting as a library of vast knowledge. According to the legend-story, the skulls were dispersed when humans abused this knowledge, around the time of the fall of Atlantis or the Great Flood.  Since then, they’ve been hidden until such a time when humans were ready to treat the knowledge these skulls contain with much better care. Some believe, this time is now and thus, some of these skulls are coming out into the open, including via wide media exposure. George Lucas, among others, are big believers of the power of these skulls as evidenced by his movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls.

JoAnn, with her lovely sense of humor, also told me about actor Dan Akroyd and his fascination with crystal skulls to the point that he created a product around his obsession: Crystal Head Vodka. I aim to try it one of these days.

UPDATE: Well, wouldn’t you know it but the same day I post about crystal heads, so does Ellie Crystal!

The why of a few of my favorite herbs, oils, and elixirs: An ever-expanding list

Watercolor painting of the spikenard plant

Watercolor painting of the spikenard plant

For the cover of my aromatic medicine thesis, I commissioned botanical artist Alana Lea to paint a watercolor of the ancient Himalayan wonder plant, Spikenard. She did a fabulous job and I received a 97% on my thesis 🙂

Herbs, elixirs, and therapeutic-grade essential oils have infiltrated my psyche in the last 12 years or so and I thought I would share just a few of my faves here.

  • Holy Basil—Revered as tulsi in Ayurvedic medicine. Tulsi means The Incomparable One or the Mother Medicine of Nature in the Ayurvedic tradition, delivering nutrients to the mind necessary for the experience of enlightment.
  • Turmeric—“The Golden Goddess”, a key balancing and detoxifying herb.
  • Ashwagandha—A rasayana herb or adaptogen that works to normalize physiological function.
  • Ginger—Rejuvenates the real seat of all emotions: the heart space that is our tummies.
  • Spearmint—A cleanser of a clogged palate and when diffused, a cleanser of a foggy noggin.
  • Frankincense—The aroma infiltrates the cells and membranes of our heart, mind, and soul. Reconnects one with the One.
  • Lavender—The factotum of the essential oil family. Its uses are myriad.
  • Sage—Ancient Romans labelled it a sacred herb. A stimulating oil that aids one with mental fatigue.
  • Spikenard—The anointing oil of the ancients and a deeply sacred oil for healing.
  • Iolite Crystal Essence Aura Mist with AquaSensoria — This essence was created for me by Sherri Lynn Nelson, proprietess of Rocky Hill Crystal Essences. I prominently display it on the desk in my home office and generously spray it whenever I’m moved to do so. An instant elevator of the spirit.
  • Young Living‘s Valor Essential Oil Blend—Applied nightly onto the bottoms of feet and to the throat, wrists, chest and the base of the neck, this blend enhances an individual’s internal resources.
